The repertoire on offer in this cycle ranges from Handel's oratorio »Susanna«, performed by the multi-award-winning Scottish Dunedin Consort on its debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus, to a very special Mahler project with the Musicbanda Franui and the Bavarian Radio Choir. Together with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and its chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle, the phenomenal choir from Munich can be experienced in a further concert, the programme of which includes Brahms' »German Requiem«. Two settings of the Latin requiem mass demonstrate completely contrasting approaches: Verdi's »Messa da Requiem«, which has all the dramatic force of its author's operas, is contrasted by Fauré's Requiem, with the central »Pie Jesu« sung by Sabine Devieilhe, as a lyrical and intimate counterpart. Sacred music by another opera composer, Rossini's »Stabat mater«, concludes the cycle. Haydn's oratorio »The Seasons« provides a cheerful counterpoint to the commemoration of the dead.
