Great song writing with a Schumannian

»Oh Clara, what a bliss it is to write for song; I had long missed it.« So wrote Robert Schumann to his bride Clara Wieck in 1840, suddenly enthusiastic about composing songs. The song was to play an important role in the Schumanns' everyday married life - and ultimately his later songs in particular can also be seen as a kind of mirror of his soul. As a writer himself, Schumann worked intensively with the texts and played with contrasts, forms, textual omissions and tone painting in his compositions. The fantastic baritone Christian Gerhaher now performs a recital of selected works by the Romantic composer with Gerold Huber at the piano. He sees himself as a Schumannian: »For me, Schumann is the greatest artist of all« - an enthusiasm that is reflected in his interpretations.
