Travelling and on holiday at Lake Wörthersee
»The many places where I worked on the concerto are characteristic of the nomadic life that a concertising artist must lead. The main theme of the first movement was written in Paris, that of the second in Voronezh [Russia], I completed the orchestration in Baku and the premiere took place in Madrid in December 1935«, summarises Sergei Prokofiev about his second violin concerto, which was composed immediately before his return to Russia. Violinist Lisa Batiashvili, known for her expressive interpretations and the ease with which she masters virtuoso passages, will perform the work in a guest appearance by the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, which is travelling from Rome. The evening opens with Claude Debussy's enchanting »Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune«, a symphonic poem based on a poem by Stéphane Mallarmé. In the second part of the concert, the orchestra will play Johannes Brahms' Second Symphony, which was written at Lake Wörthersee and completed there in just four months by the brooding composer, who struggled for a long time with his works.
