The Story of Bethlehem - the unknown Christmas repertoire

The Christmas story, so rich in plots and characters, has inspired countless compositions over the centuries. Yet a large number of these works are virtually unknown today - not all the musical treasures have been unearthed. All parts of what is indisputably the most popular passage in the New Testament have been set to music: the prophecies of the Savior's arrival, the birth in Bethlehem, King Herod's cruel infanticide and the crowning finale, the arrival of the Magi. Under the direction of Paul Van Nevel, the Belgian Huelgas Ensemble performs a repertoire that ranges from the 13th to the beginning of the 20th century. The repertoire ranges from anonymous late medieval works to unknown Christmas carols: A Christmas program that reflects the richness of our entire musical heritage!
