Das Lied von der Erde
Song and symphony: in no other composer do such different genres penetrate each other as boldly and richly as in Gustav Mahler - and become one on a higher level. »When I conceive a great musical structure«, Mahler wrote in 1897, »I always come to the point where I have to use the word as the vehicle for my musical idea.« He achieved the last great fusion of the spheres of word and sound in his symphonic song cycle »Das Lied von der Erde«. Mahler wrote to his friend Bruno Walter that the work was »probably the most personal thing I have done so far«. Mahler compiled the texts freely from translations from the Chinese by Hans Bethge. An outstanding interpretation of this masterpiece can be experienced in the Great Hall: Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, sung by mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner and tenor Daniel Behle.
