Rising star at the piano: Lukas Sternath
When a young pianist conquers the major stages of Europe within a very short space of time, wins numerous international prizes and is nominated for the European Concert Hall Organization's »Rising Stars« cycle, then it is worth listening carefully. Lukas Sternath is such an exceptional talent, and with his current recital programme, the 23-year-old Viennese shows why the international classical music scene thinks so highly of him.
An exciting program between tradition and the present
The program opens with Sofia Gubaidulina's powerful Chaconne, an early work by the Russian composer, which, with its expressive tonal language and archaic power, is an impressive calling card for the young performer. With the »Variations and Fugue on a Theme by George Frideric Handel« op. 24 by Johannes Brahms, Sternath presents a colorful pianistic monument to Romanticism, inspired by the Baroque art of variation. The audience can also look forward to »Three Pieces for Piano«, a composition specially commissioned for the Rising Stars series by Patricia Kopatchinskaja, which will be performed for the first time in Austria on this evening. The crowning finale is a pinnacle piece of piano literature: Franz Liszt's Sonata in B minor. With its breathtaking technical demands and creative fantasy between brute force and extreme lyricism, this work is a touchstone for every pianist.
