Magnifique!

Elegance, intelligence, esprit: these are the three words Michael Stegemann used to describe the recording of Camille Saint-Saëns' piano concertos with Alexandre Kantorow for the German Record Critics' Award. The winner of the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition interprets the French composer's popular Piano Concerto No. 2 in vibrant colors and with sparkling cascades. The fact that the composer himself was an outstanding pianist, who premiered the work commissioned by Anton Rubinstein in Paris in 1868, is evident from the virtuoso piano part. In addition to Maurice Ravel's »La Valse«, which was also premiered in Paris a good forty years later, the program includes an Austrian premiere by Barbara Assiginaak, a Canadian composer of indigenous descent. The second half of the concert will feature the 6th Symphony, nicknamed »Pathétique«, by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who died of cholera a few days after its premiere.
