Helmut Lachenmann on his 90th birthday

In the late 1950s, he was Luigi Nono's only pupil. Through his radical deconstruction of the traditional instrumental sound, he expanded its possibilities enormously and thus had a lasting influence on entire generations of musicians. Today, Helmut Lachenmann, who celebrates his 90th birthday in November, is the doyen among the great composers of our time. To mark the occasion, Trio Catch, which made its debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus in 2016 as part of the »Rising Stars« cycle, is paying tribute to him with a performance of his »Allegro sostenuto«. At its premiere in December 1989, it was celebrated as »a kind of rebirth of chamber music at the end of the 20th century«. This masterpiece, which has long since become a classic, is preceded by three pieces by younger composers, all of whom have been awarded the Erste Bank Composition Prize in recent years and whose clarinet trios have all been premiered by Trio Catch.
