Romantics on a journey
Under the baton of conductor Lorenzo Viotti, known for his captivating interpretations, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra presents two Romantic masterpieces: Camille Saint-Saëns' Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1 in A minor and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite »Scheherazade«.
The music critic Romain Rolland characterised his compatriot Camille Saint-Saëns as a »Frenchman on a journey, following his imagination, [...] indolently given over to the whims of his impressions«, but in all his compositions one can recognise his »spiritual and agile figure«. Camille Saint-Saëns' 1st Violoncello Concerto, which is characterised by great expressiveness, instrumental balance and a bold structure, is very popular with performers and audiences alike. The solo part is played by Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta, who has already caused a sensation many times at the Vienna Konzerthaus.
With an ingratiating solo violin and a great wealth of exoticism and dazzling tonal colours, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's most successful work, »Scheherazade«, takes us on a fairytale journey into stories from »One Thousand and One Nights«.
