»one is pleasing and the other is boring«

In November, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France will shine under the Finnish conductor Mikko Franck and perform works by Ravel, Bruch and Sibelius with Hilary Hahn as soloist. Maurice Ravel once said, there were just two sorts of music: »one is pleasing and the other is boring«. For this reason, he wanted his works to entertain in the best possible sense and combined in them subtle humour with clear melodic lines and strict formal structures. For the children of his friends, the Godebskis, he set the magic of childhood poetry and fairy tales to music in »Mother Goose«. The French radio symphony orchestra will also perform the Second Symphony by Jean Sibelius, a compatriot of their chief conductor. Sibelius repeatedly used Nordic myths and also made frequent use of folk melodies in his works. The central work of the evening is Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G-Minor op. 26. It is not only one of the best-loved concertos in the violin repertoire, but ever since its overwhelmingly successful first performance in Bremen by Joseph Joachim has always been Bruch’s best-known piece. With the world-famous violinist Hilary Hahn as soloist – a featured artist at the Wiener Konzerthaus last season – you can rest assured that every facet of Max Bruch’s lustrous masterpiece will shine to perfection.
