Halleluja!

Peter Eötvös' secular oratorio with a libretto by Péter Esterházy is about the Here and Now: the composer’s stated intention was to »paint a picture of what the year 2016 really looks like«. And it can be accurately described as a »carousel of conflict« between the characters – an angel, a prophet, the chorus and the narrator. The angel? A woman with a husky voice, who shared a drink with Nietzsche and who has carefully cultivated her intoxication ever since. The prophet? A stutterer, who frequently only manages to finish uttering his prophecies after they have come true. The chorus? A self-confident troupe of singers, who are not content to simply sing Halleluja. The narrator? A man who wants to convey the fragmentary scenes to the audience. Following the success of the work’s world premiere at this year’s Salzburg Festival under Daniel Harding, it will be particularly exciting that Peter Eötvös will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the Vienna premiere. Being performed alongside the work will be the visionary Adagio from Gustav Mahler’s unfinished Tenth Symphony and Arnold Schoenberg’s difficult, but magnificent choral piece »Friede auf Erden«.
