One must celebrate the festivities as they fall. The Venetians have always been aware of this. Wars, epidemics and famines characterized the 16th century, for example, and the successes achieved in between were celebrated with solemn processions and pompous festivities. In 1595, for example, they celebrated the election of the generous Marino Grimani as Doge – accompanied by festive music composed for the occasion by Giovanni Gabrieli. Early music experts Paul McCreesh and Gabrieli Consort & Players have meticulously researched the music that must have been heard at a mass celebrating the Doge's coronation, and are now giving a guest performance of their legendary reconstruction at the Wiener Konzerthaus.
