Sense of Swing

Billy Childs is one of the most versatile and recognized artists on the music scene today. The jazz pianist captivates audiences and critics alike with »his exquisite touch, prolific improvisational talent, and phenomenal ear.« People praise his spectacular improvisational contributions, which are »deeply musical and aesthetically impressive.« (The Hollywood Reporter) In addition, Childs is »an inventive composer and arranger whose efforts in these areas consistently expand the dimensions of the jazz genre – and beyond.« (Los Angeles Times)

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Childs counts Herbie Hancock, Keith Emerson and Chick Corea among his early influences. His love of composition was sparked by classical composers such as Paul Hindemith, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky. Childs' career was significantly influenced by early apprenticeships with legendary jazz trombonist J. J. Johnson and trumpet great Freddie Hubbard in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Now the five-time Grammy winner performs with his Billy Childs Quartet in the Great Hall.
