Shattering work of confession

»For a few seconds after the last note, it was as silent as in a crypt, and only slowly could the listeners break free from the spell of what they had heard.« In one of the last letters sent from Europe to the composer Arnold Schönberg, exiled in California, before his death in July 1951, his son Georg describes deeply affected impressions from the Vienna Konzerthaus. Six years after the end of the war, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra had given the Austrian premiere of the Holocaust cantata »A Survivor from Warsaw« in the Great Hall.

Arnold Schoenberg created a stirring work of confession from his insights into the shattering dissonances of humanity and the horrors of the Holocaust. The cantata is a snapshot of National Socialist totalitarianism and its overcoming through collective (Jewish) identity in monotheistic faith.
