Not every year!
Bach's six-part cantata cycle, also known as the »Christmas Oratorio«,
played a peculiarly »half« role in the repertoire of the Vienna Symphony
Orchestra for many decades. With astonishing regularity, only the first
three cantatas were performed in December. It was not until 2018 that
the then chief conductor Philippe Jordan also included the three »New
Year's cantatas« in the program, while it is now up to the Dutch Bach
specialist Ton Koopman to produce a »cantata mix« for the first time.
Koopman's choice falls on the numbers 1, 2 & 6, whereby he provides
for the greatest possible musical variety and gives all voice groups in
the orchestra, the choir and the soloists grateful opportunity to shine.
