North vs. South

Buster Keaton's war movie grotesque »The General« is one of the most elaborate comedies of the silent era. Wild chases, breakneck stunts, amorous advances and the heroic deed of the lanky Johnnie Gray make for great cinema. The plot is based on a true incident: the hijacking of a steam locomotive during the Secession War. Since its rediscovery in the 1950s, the film has been one of the masterpieces of the U.S. comedian and director, who also stars. Timothy Brock composed a new film score in 2005, for which he drew musical inspiration from the American Civil War era and the late 1920s. When the film gem is performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus, he will be at the podium of the RSO Vienna.
