Fairytale-like
The mermaid Rusalka, Hansel and Gretel, dolls and a little shepherd wander through the second, fairytale-like half of this concert by the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Antonín Dvořák's Sonatina in G major op. 100 is followed by the »Song to the Moon« from his opera »Rusalka« and the »Evening Blessing« from Engelbert Humperdinck's opera »Hansel and Gretel«, which is particularly popular at Christmas time, two of the most popular pieces of opera literature (in instrumental arrangements). Impressionistic pictures are painted by »Serenade for the doll«, »The little shepherd« and »Golliwogg's cake-walk« from Claude Debussy's »Children's Corner«.
This is preceded by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra K 218 and his less frequently performed Symphony K 84/73q. In addition to the main key of D major, these two pieces are also linked by their connection to Italy: the Symphony K 84/73q was composed in 1770 during Mozart's first trip to Italy. Although he composed the Violin Concerto in Salzburg in 1775, it was strongly influenced by his impressions of his third trip to Italy in particular.
