Dramatic Beethoven

The performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Singakademie traditionally give at the turn of the year, will be conducted by Omer Meir Wellber for the first time. The appearance of the music director of the Vienna Volksoper, who will soon be leaving his post after only a short time in office to take over from Kent Nagano at the Hamburg State Opera, promises a dramatic interpretation, and most of the top-class soloists are also known from the opera stage: The Norwegian soprano Mari Eriksmoen is well known to local audiences for her acclaimed performances in Mozart and Strauss roles at the Theater an der Wien. Canadian mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta was named »Young Singer of the Year« at the 2018 International Opera Awards. Her versatile compatriot Michael Schade no longer needs to be introduced to anyone since he emerged as a leading Mozart tenor in the 1990s.
