»Heavenly Length« in Schubert and a »Gran Toccata«
Susanna Mälkki's passion for new music makes her one of the remarkable conductors of our time: the native Finn led the Ensemble intercontemporain from 2006 to 2013 and conducted numerous world premieres in this capacity. Since 2016, Mälkki has been principal conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. She also made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera with a contemporary work: Kaija Saariaho's opera »L'amour de loin«. At the Vienna Konzerthaus, she conducts the premiere of Dieter Ammann's piano concerto, »Gran Toccata«, with pianist Andreas Haefliger and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. This will be followed in the second half of the concert by a true »classic« of orchestral literature: Schubert's »Great C Major Symphony«, about whose »heavenly length« Robert Schumann raved. For a long time, the work was one of the most extensive orchestral works of all - and to this day, it remains an integral part of concert life.
