Haydn's »Nicolai Mass« at the Konzerthaus for the first time
They are still far too seldom on the concert programme: Joseph Haydn's masses, whose light-hearted piety and pious confidence no other composer of the time can hold a candle to. In this case, it is to the credit of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Boys' Choir under the direction of Niels Muus that Haydn's so-called »Nicolaimesse« - composed for Prince Nikolaus Esterházy's name day in 1772 - is being performed for the first time in the Vienna Konzerthaus. Together with Mozart's Marian motet K 273, this sixth oratorio setting by Haydn forms the optimistic centre of a programme that is rather pensively coated with instrumental music in a crisis mood.
