Music against the war

Dmitri Shostakovich's eighth symphony impresses with its deep emotionality and dramatic intensity. Written in the summer of 1943, it was »an attempt to express the experiences of the people, to reflect the terrible tragedy of war«, according to the composer. However, accusations of formalism on the part of the regime led to a performance ban of several years in 1948. Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto, composed in 1940, was also confronted with such accusations. The innovative and virtuoso work is characterised by folkloric elements. The dedicatee David Oistrakh was the soloist at both the Moscow premiere in November 1940 and the first performance at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1945. When the concerto is performed for the sixth time in the Great Hall, the Serbian-French violinist Nemanja Radulović will provide soloistic splendour alongside the Vienna RSO. Andrey Boreyko, chief conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, will be on the podium.
