Living tradition

»Passion, precision, warmth, a golden blend: these are the hallmarks of this excellent Israeli string quartet«, wrote the New York Times about the Jerusalem Quartet. In its 20 years of existence, the Israeli quartet has developed great tonal depth and a broad repertoire. It is able to bring out subtleties in the classical repertoire as well as mastering more recent works with openness and curiosity. Framed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's and Johannes Brahms' third string quartets, the Jerusalem Quartet will perform Paul Ben-Haim's String Quartet No. 1 op. 21 for the first time at the Vienna Konzerthaus. The Bavarian-born composer emigrated to Palestine in 1933, later became an Israeli citizen and dedicated himself to developing a specifically Israeli national style. Ben-Haim was strongly oriented towards the European musical tradition of classical and romanticism and combined this with influences from Middle Eastern music. His compositions are characterized by lyrical, clearly drawn melodies and a special musical idiom.
