Musical double
Johann Christian Bach's Symphony in D major op. 18/3 is one of the most beautiful compositions ever written for double orchestra. Johann Christian Bach exerted a strong influence on the compositional work of his friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others. Although there is no double orchestra, Mozart's brilliant E flat major Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, written around the same time as Bach's D major Symphony, offers a double dialog between the solo instruments. The solo part is played by the brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen, one of the most sought-after piano duos. Only two of Franz Schubert's symphonies are in a minor key. In addition to the »Unfinished«, this is the »tragic« Fourth, which Antonín Dvořák praised with the words: »One is astonished that such a young man had the strength to express himself with such profound pathos.«
