Against violence and for peace
The immense suffering caused by the destruction and unimaginable atrocities of the war against Ukraine shakes this European country, all of Europe and large parts of the world. This attack also targets the foundation of values of democratic, pluralistic and free Europe. The force of this aggression makes us realize how fragile our coexistence is.
The logic of any war is aimed at escalation. In order to escape this threatening constellation, we must confront injustice with reason and a sense of proportion, and at the same time with a clear commitment to our values. In doing so, we give the greatest possible space to those deeply human values that unite us across borders and cultures. Music and art can play an important role in this. The Wiener Konzerthaus stands for the principles of democracy and pluralism on the foundation of civic engagement and, as an organizer, is committed to a differentiated attitude towards all musicians.
Current developments must not lead to the exclusion of artists solely on the basis of their nationality. As in the past, we will judge on a case-by-case basis whether the political stance of the respective artist is in line with the self-image of this house or not.
Our solidarity is with the people in Ukraine, whose lives and future are under immediate threat.
