Organ music is a powerful sound universe in its own right. The stately Rieger organ in the Wiener Konzerthaus provides the »raw material« with which first-class organists of the calibre of Wayne Marshall or Iveta Apkalna build their sound edifices. Wayne Marshall not only interprets masterpieces of organ literature – such as Reubke's sonata »The 94th Psalm« – but also gives free rein to his improvisational skills on the queen of instruments. Iveta Apkalna presents a milestone of modern organ literature: around Ligeti's »Volumina« she spans other modern works – including Sofia Gubaidulina's »Light and Dark« - but also excerpts from Bach's »Musical Offering«. Christian Schmitt and Christoph Sietzen prove that percussion and organ are an unusual but delightful combination in their first joint performance at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Johannes Zeinler, who won first prizes at the Chartres and St. Albans competitions, is regarded as a young hopeful on the local organ scene.
