Great symphonic music: In the opening concert, Robin Ticciati takes Mahler's enchanting »Song of the Earth« on the podium. Anton Bruckner, whose 200th birthday falls in 2024, is particularly well represented in the program: with the Eighth under the direction of Manfred Honeck and the Fifth under that of Lahav Shani, his two most colossal symphonies can be experienced; Constantinos Carydis confronts his »Te Deum« with Berlioz's »Symphonie fantastique«. Susanna Mälkki - one of two conductors in the cycle, along with Han-Na Chang, with Dvořák's »Symphony from the New World« - devotes herself to Schubert's great C major symphony and Jaap van Zweden's Beethoven's Fifth, while old master Christoph Eschenbach creates an all-Tchaikovsky evening with Joshua Bell. Among the other soloists are Christoph Sietzen with a new percussion concerto by Johannes Maria Staud and Andreas Haefliger with Dieter Ammann's piano concerto, co-commissioned by the Vienna Konzerthaus.
