Nature & Passion

The New York-based Chinese composer and Oscar winner Tan Dun dedicates each of the three movements of his percussion concerto »The Tears of Nature« to a recent natural disaster in China, Japan and the USA. The composer recognizes the tears of nature in the water of the rain, the oceans and the rivers. They are, he says, the sign of repentance for the violent and often life-destroying natural eruptions. At the beginning of the concert, the soloist wanders through the orchestra, smashing stones together, to the timpani, which Vivi Vassileva makes sound not only with mallets and drum brooms. She also wipes the skin with her bare hands, strokes the timpani and plays with fingernails. The »young queen of the drums«, as the Süddeutsche Zeitung calls Vivi Vassileva, reveals what she thinks about when she makes music: »At best, not the notes. About smells, images, emotions, about what I want to tell with the music. But you always have to be very focused.«
