»A very amusing appearance«
It was with tone poems such as »Don Quixote« and »A Hero’s Life« that the young Richard Strauss established himself as one of the most brilliant exponents of musical modernism in Germany. The two works, composed at more or less the same time, can be seen as direct juxtapositions. And it is no coincidence that the two pieces are being performed together by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the same concert. To capture the kaleidoscopic nature of »Don Quixote’s« fantastic adventures, Strauss chose a huge palette of orchestral colours and instruments, mixing orchestral variations with elements of symphonic poems and instrumental concertos. Following a performance of »Don Quixote« in Frankfurt under his own baton, Strauss once noted contentedly: »It’s a very original piece, thoroughly new in colour and with a very amusing appearance.« In the Wiener Konzerthaus, one of today’s leading cello virtuosos, Frenchman Gautier Capuçon, slips into the musical »role« of Don Quixote. The theme of Don Quixote’s faithful companion, Sancho Pansa, is primarily reserved for the viola – here performed by the Viennese viola player Herbert Müller. »A Hero’s Life« provisionally marked Strauss’s crowning achievement of his exploration of the tone poem. The Munich-based composer did not shy away from comparing himself with Napoleon or Caesar in terms of his historic importance. »A Hero’s Life« is self-portrayal at its most monumental – and, of course, makes monumental demands of the performers. »Others compose, I make musical history!«
