Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

»That is me«

For their new song recital, Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch turn to works of Austrian and German romanticism and early modernism. And from Franz Liszt’s extensive and pianistically demanding songs, they will be performing settings of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine: great literature set to music by one of the great individualists, who, in meticulously tracing the texts, replaced the regular stanza construction with myriad new smaller forms. Gustav Mahler's choice of texts for the Five Songs on Poems by Friedrich Rückert, composed around the time of his Fifth Symphony, was extremely personal. The intimate »Liebst du um Schönheit« (If you love for beauty), for example, seems to be addressed to his young wife Alma. And the composer is supposed to have said of the elegaic »Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen« (I am lost to the world): »That is me.« To complete the evening, Jonas Kaufmann and Helmut Deutsch will also perform small jewels of carefully chiselled and richly coloured songs by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss.
