The Congress Dances
From September 1814 to June 1815, Vienna was the focus of world attention as the venue of the Congress of Vienna. The numerous rounds of negotiations, in which a reorganization of the European world of states was being struggled for after the turmoil caused by the Napoleonic Wars and the end of the Holy Roman Empire, were accompanied by an extensive supporting program, in which the dynasty and the residential city presented themselves in a brilliant light. However, it would be inadequate to view the congress festivities as mere amusements; rather, the »court festivities« in particular were part of an elaborate strategy of representation. The essential negotiations did not take place in large plenary sessions, but in the back rooms of aristocratic palaces, at balls, dinners and souperes, in the corridors and boxes of theaters or at the great popular festivals. Musical events served here as a foil on which political strategies and content were skillfully staged.
Ludwig van Beethoven was also inspired by the mood surrounding the congress to write a »patriotic composition« and performed the cantata »Der glorreiche Augenblick« to great applause, putting the feelings of his contemporaries into music. Andrés Orozco-Estrada reconstructs the program of that historic academy that Beethoven organized on November 29, 1814, on the occasion of the opening of the Congress of Vienna.
