Virtuoso Piano Duo

Leif Ove Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin must be in every ranking of the world's most respected pianists – now the two can be experienced as a duo. Duo piano playing involves technical hurdles that differ from those of accompanying a violinist or playing together in a piano trio with violinists and cellists, especially in terms of the synchronicity required. »When you have two pianos with two very precise touches, it sticks out like a sore thumb if you're not absolutely together, so you really have to be in sync,« Hamelin says. Andsnes adds, »Most pianists are a little afraid of it because it feels vulnerable when pianists have different touches. It's an instrument of such precision because of the verticality, the nature of the instrument, the touch of the strings. Just feeling the timing and the rhythm together can be very challenging.«
