It is one of Handel's absolute masterpieces and yet is now being performed by Concerto Copenhagen for the first time in almost 40 years at the Vienna Konzerthaus: the two-part Roman oratorio »La resurrezione« ('The Resurrection'). At the beginning of the 18th century, when a papal ban on opera was intended to counteract the moral decay of the city, oratorios served as a substitute drug for the pleasure-seeking (church) aristocracy. The spectacular first performance on Easter Sunday 1708 by a 50-piece orchestra was conducted by Arcangelo Corelli. Margherita Durastante shone in the role of Maddalena - a scandal! At that time, the participation of women in oratorios was a veritable sacrilege.
