Rare Sounds
It is inexplicably one of Anton Bruckner's less frequently performed works, especially in the 1872 version: the Second Symphony. The Upper Austrian composer began writing it in Vienna in October 1871, returning from a trip to London where thousands had cheered him as he played the organ at the Royal Albert Hall and Crystal Palace. It received its nickname, »Pausen-Symphonie« from the composer's characteristic, highly effective general pauses. In a revision in 1877, Bruckner softened some of these drastic effects. Now is the opportunity to hear the extremely rarely performed earlier version, conducted by the excellent Bruckner exegete Markus Poschner, who is currently working on a complete recording of the symphonies.
