A feast of timbres

When the internationally acclaimed Belcea Quartet meets the multi-award-winning French pianist Bertand Chamayou for the cycle finale for the piano quintets by Shostakovich and Franck, phenomenal timbres are guaranteed. The model for Shostakovich's late quintet was unmistakably Johann Sebastian Bach - whether in terms of the harmonic arcs or the crystal-clear lines. The work was composed in 1940 at the request of the Beethoven Quartet, which was responsible for the premiere in November of the same year with the composer at the piano. Sixty years earlier, in 1880, César Franck had aroused the enthusiasm of Parisian audiences. His almost orchestral piano quintet, composed in 1878/79, represents a late bravura piece in Franck's oeuvre after almost four decades without major chamber music works.
