Antichambria with Chopin
Frédéric Chopin was - contrary to what his exemplary virtuosity would suggest - not a »showman«, but a declared friend of the small frame. He preferred to perform in the intimate ambience of private salons and thus in close contact with his audience, which consisted mostly of rapt ladies. The Quatuor mosaïques, committed to historical performance practice, has therefore invited the American piano virtuoso Kevin Kenner on the fortepiano to interpret Chopin's second - but, according to the genesis, first - piano concerto in the way Chopin himself might have preferred: chamber-music-like in an original arrangement for piano and string quintet. The harmonious framework is provided by quartets by two pronounced »pianist-composers«: the French early Romantic Hyacinthe Jadin and Robert Schumann.
