»He who perseveres to the end will be blessed.«

400 musicians - choir and orchestra combined - gave the acclaimed premiere of Mendelssohn's second oratorio in Birmingham. »The last note of ›Elias‹ was lost in a unison of unending applause«, wrote a Times critic. »It was as if the long-pent-up enthusiasm had at last broken through and filled the air with wild cries of excitement.« Eight numbers had to be repeated. The two main reasons for this landslide victory of Mendelssohn were, on the one hand, the gripping dramatic layout of the work in general and the choruses set in the best Handelian manner in particular. Now, when Raphaël Pichon leads the choir and orchestra of his original sound ensemble Pygmalion through Mendelssohn's effective score, one can be sure of its overwhelming effect.
