Japanese drumming

Taking the traditional Japanese drumming art of taiko to all corners of the world, exploring its inexhaustible rhythmic possibilities, and preserving it as a living, ever-changing art form is the mission of Ensemble Kodo. Since the drum group, based on the small Japanese island of Sado in western Honshūs, made its debut at the Berlin Festival in 1981, it has given more than 7,000 concerts in 53 countries on five continents. In Sado, she has organized the annual international festival »Earth Celebration«, Japan's longest-running music festival, since 1988. Kodo also regularly gives taiko workshops to thousands of school children throughout Japan.
On the occasion of his 40th anniversary, Kodo's program »Warabe« focuses on his classical repertoire and revisits the musical aesthetics of his early years. It presents various simple expressions of taiko in which the ensemble's unique sound and rhythmic power are particularly effective. In 2024 Kodo is on tour in Europe for the first time with »Warabe«.
