Lyrical pieces

This evening, the fantastic Quatuor Ébène presents works from the classical, romantic and modern periods, written more or less every century - proving once again how timelessly relevant the string quartet genre still is today. Mozart's so-called »Violet Quartet« owes its nickname to the fact that the melody of its slow movement can be considered a variant of Mozart's popular song »The Violet«. In fact, the entire work is the most songful of Mozart's last mature quartets. The Norwegian Romantic composer Edvard Grieg was also an outspoken lyricist, as evidenced not only by his countless »Lyrical Pieces«, but also by his numerous songs. Consequently, his only completed string quartet also contains lyrical »islands«, which already anticipates Impressionism and is now considered one of the most remarkable pieces of chamber music of its time. Finally, Alfred Schnittke's 3rd String Quartet makes many references to older music, including Orlando di Lasso, Beethoven's »Great FugueJ and, last but not least, Shostakovich.
