Que saudade!
It is not only the singer Marisa dos Reis Nunes, better known as Mariza, who was born in Mozambique and grew up in Lisbon, who has come a long way, but also the style of music to which she has devoted herself. Fado began in small Portuguese taverns. Taken over by the dictatorial regime, it was long considered reactionary – until it was revived, modernised and taken out into the world by fadistas like Mariza. Mariza gave her first performances in her father's pub at the tender age of five. From the beginning, she says, she simply made music. So it seemed only natural for her to integrate elements of gospel, jazz, pop, bossa nova or flamenco. After concerts in honour of the legendary Amália Rodrigues in 2000, she was named the best fado voice of the year. Since then, she has been at home on the world's great stages. Mariza has already performed nine times at the Vienna Konzerthaus, and in mid-April she returns to the Great Hall.
