"For your sake ..."

Cafe Benatzky & Leopoldi serves up a very special musical melange: Hermann Leopoldi was a piano humourist and entertainer, Ralph Benatzky a highly successful composer for theatre, operetta and film. Leopoldi, forced to emigrate to America as a Jew, was just as successful there as in his old homeland and was loved and celebrated even after his return to Austria until his death. Benatzky, creator of many highly successful operettas such as »Im weißen Rössl«, left Europe out of disgust for the Nazi regime and to protect his Jewish lover, but was unable to gain a foothold in America and was largely forgotten after his return. Erwin Steinhauer and one of the best klezmer bands in the country recall these two very different fates – albeit in a new musical guise.
