Future Jazz
The 25-year-old alto saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins grew up in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. After graduating from high school, he moved to New York City in 2015 to attend the prestigious Juilliard School. There, he met his first influential mentor in Ambrose Akinmusire and encountered a musician who would change his professional life: prominent pianist and composer Jason Moran, who took the blood young musician on tour. Since then, Wilkins has collaborated with jazz greats such as Solange Knowles, Gretchen Parlato, Wynton Marsalis, Gerald Clayton, Aaron Parks and Joel Ross. His own quartet has been unchanged - except for Rick Rosato on bass - since his second semester at Juilliard, which many consider the secret to his sensational success. Wilkins' stated goal with his current »Blue Note« album, »The 7th Hand«, is to »create music and develop a voice that has a deep spiritual and emotional impact«.
