An excursion into the world of French Baroque opera

In the second half of the 18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau was one of the fiercest critics of French opera of the Ancien Régime, which he wished to hell along with the French language. »Un aboiement continuel« (»a perpetual barking«) was this language and totally unsuitable for music. Today, the operas of Lully, Rameau & Co. are beyond reproach, are rightly regarded as masterpieces and hold their own on the world's stages. Nevertheless, French baroque opera has many peculiarities that still cause confusion today. Starting with the five-part string section and its designations through to its idiosyncratic recitative and aria forms. Christophe Rousset, one of the most renowned experts in the field, will shed some light on the subject at this colloquium.
