Masterpieces and master interpreters united in impressive density: At the center of the symphonic action here is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which will be heard no less than four times under the baton of conductors as diverse as Jakub Hrůša, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta and Andris Nelsons. Their programs are correspondingly individual. A tableau de la mer follows an Eastern European special, a Finnish-Russian tete-a-tete a classically arranged philharmonic concert. The guest contributions from Paris and Oslo are combined by Klaus Mäkelä. The Finn, who at just 27 years of age has already reached the highest positions, will not only shine as a baton virtuoso - in Brahms' Double Concerto he can also be experienced with equal virtuosity on the violoncello, his original instrument. Thus Klaus Mäkelä joins the ranks of the excellent soloists this cycle has to offer: after the grande dame of the piano Martha Argerich, for example, the first French winner of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition Alexandre Kantorov or the master cellist Gautier Capuçon.
