Evocative Uncompromisingness

His performances have cult status: Ivo Pogorelich's evocative interpretations have expanded the understanding of piano literature and set new standards. Through his uncompromising artistic standards and devoted search for the ideal musical expression, Pogorelich has created authenticity in more than four decades of his work - his innovative approach makes him one of the most original musical thinkers of our time.

When Ivo Pogorelich set out to individually illuminate the cosmos of the eponymous composer at the 1980 Chopin Competition, he caused a veritable scandal with his new »Chopin style«. Martha Argerich left the jury when he was forced to withdraw from the competition before the final round. Some time later he presented his own reading in a first recording. For decades, mazurkas, polonaises and berceuses accompanied him – he returns to these genres in his recital. »Not for dancing« Chopin noted about his mazurkas, indicating the stylization of life in art. Pogorelich follows this sublimation in his interpretations; like the composer, he stands for a tone free of sentimentality and a »co-creative interpretation« that penetrates the depths of the score.
