Metamorphoses

Richard Strauss composed »Metamorphosen« as a lament for the German cities bombed out in 1945 against the backdrop of the human and cultural devastation at the end of World War II – a chorus of 23 solo strings. A lament staged with the means of music. The work is a hymn to the transformation of darkness into light. »Metamorphosen« he called this music, a study as if it were a triviality. Yet the result was a poignant work for the ages – unlike anything Richard Strauss had composed before.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky also created a coming-of-age work with his Sixth Symphony. The so-called »Pathétique« concludes the composer's symphonic output with a moving and at the same time fascinating artistic treatment of the theme of transience. In the symphony, music is heard that tells of death - especially the final movement is reminiscent of a requiem.
MusicAeterna, which brings together orchestra members from 15 countries, performs here with an expanded lineup. Additional Ukrainian musicians based in Europe have been invited to participate and together create this extraordinary program.
