Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Finnish DNA

At just 25 years of age, Klaus Mäkelä is already considered a shooting star of the conducting guild: the celebrated principal conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic will devote himself to all of Jean Sibelius' symphonies on the podium of his orchestra on three consecutive days at the Vienna Konzerthaus. A promising combination, since Sibelius' music is »part of the orchestra and my DNA,« as the Finnish-born conductor enthusiastically admits.

Mäkelä approaches his work meticulously: »I am a passionate watchmaker and want to understand the mechanism of a watch. I break a piece down into many small structures. And I analyze them. Then I put those little structures back together. When you work on a score, you always ask yourself questions: why this note? Why this rhythm? And then, slowly, very slowly, you find answers.«

Klaus Mäkelä impresses as a prudent orchestra leader with clear interpretive ideas, as a reflective connoisseur of various performance traditions in the 20th century, and through early artistic maturity.
