First and only things
In 2017, Lausanne-born Richard Dubugnon's only string quartet to date received its world premiere in Zurich. Commissioned by the renowned Swiss Chamber Concerts, the Swiss composer reflects in an original way on the divine music of Johann Sebastian Bach, a founding father who made an immense impression on all subsequent generations of composers. Maurice Ravel, whose only string quartet is on the program of this evening of Quatuor Ébène, used to say: »If Bach had been the only composer in history, we would still possess the whole treasure of this art.« And Robert Schumann, one of the greatest Bach admirers of all, who also created his first (and only!) three string quartets, Op. 41, in his so-called »chamber music year« of 1842, wrote to his beloved Clara in 1838: »Bach is my daily bread.« In this respect, this concert by Quatuor Ébène can also be heard »in honorem B.A.C.H.«.
