A Heaven Full of Violins
The Bavarian State Orchestra has experienced and helped shape 500 years of music history, from its beginnings in the Munich court orchestra in 1523 to the present day. It is one of the oldest and most traditional orchestras in the world. Under the direction of Vladimir Jurowski, since 2021 General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera, the Bavarian State Orchestra, which is at home on the concert podium as well as in the orchestra pit, will present a program on the occasion of its anniversary that refers to its tradition and stylistic range: In addition to the prelude to Wagner's musical drama »Tristan und Isolde«, two of the most popular works by Schumann and Mahler will be heard. The solo part in Schumann's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, op. 54 - the epitome of the Romantic piano concerto - will be performed by Yefim Bronfman, one of the most sought-after pianists of our time. In Mahler's Symphony No. 4, the award-winning lyric soprano Elsa Dreisig, a member of the Bavarian State Opera ensemble from the 2023/24 season, sings the vocal part in the song finale, whose text is based on the folk song »Der Himmel hängt voll Geigen«, which, like the orchestra, originates from Bavaria.
