»Three congenial individualists«

Wolfgang Muthspiel, described by the »New Yorker« as »a shining light« among today's jazz guitarists, has always shown a special preference for trio instrumentation. Particularly well known, of course, is that with Larry Grenadier and Brian Blade, with whom he released his highly acclaimed ECM debut »Driftwood« in 2014. With his fourth ECM album as leader, »Angular Blues«, Muthspiel returned to his favorite format in 2020. Again, his longtime accompanist Brian Blade plays drums; but instead of Larry Grenadier, this time it's Scott Colley on bass, whose particularly earthy sound gives the trio its own dynamic. Peter Füssl wrote in the »kulturzeitschrift« about the special charm of this formation: »Three congenial individualists, whose musical ideas and energies potentiate themselves in an impressive way in bundled form.«
