First and last
Beethoven composed a total of four overtures for his first and only
opera, »Fidelio«. The »Leonore Overture No. 1«, which, in terms of its
historical development, is actually the third, opens the concert of the
Vienna Chamber Orchestra with tension and promise. It is followed by
Brahms' Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Orchestra in A minor, Op. 102,
where Nikita Boriso-Glebsky and Narek Hakhnazaryan, both members of the
Residenz-Klaviertrio of the Vienna Konzerthaus, take on the solo parts.
This is Brahms' final orchestral work, which he himself modestly
referred to as his »last folly«, and its structure as a double concerto
is exceptionally unusual for the late 19th century. He wrote it as a
reconciliation with his friend Joseph Joachim, whom he consulted for
advice on the development of the solo violin part, as he did in the
Violin Concerto. Schubert's first symphony, however, which he composed in his youth and yet reveals an astonishing musical maturity, marked the beginning of his career as a composer.
